Actively managing passive fire protection

Actively managing passive fire protection
In this seminar, we will be discussing passive fire protection from design to assessment and exploring the strategies needed to keep buildings safe.

In an industry that tends to be hidden from view, passive fire protection remains an obscure practice.

While passive fire features can be found in a vast array of buildings, many people don’t know how they are installed, how they are maintained, where they are located, and how they need to be treated.

Often, other trades will undermine the integrity of the passive feature by incorrectly stopping penetrations, leaving gaps in passive walls and floors, usually without understanding the requirements of the wall they are penetrating.

Further to wall penetrations, fire doors, can be misunderstood, with many assumptions about what is acceptable that do not align with existing standards for installation and maintenance.

In this seminar, we will be discussing passive fire protection from design to assessment:  how is it proposed for buildings, what does it take to install it, how is it maintained, and how do practitioners carry out assessments to ensure the passive fire element is performing?

Presenters include:

Benjamin Hughes-Brown, Director, Vortex Fire Pty Ltd

Benjamin is a well-known and respected fire safety engineer in Australia known for his work on occupant life safety studies, design and application of fire safety systems for occupant life protection as well as establishing Australia’s first multi-function private fire safety testing and research facility.

Benjamin specialises in working with product manufacturers to establish their materials compliance with the Building Code of Australia. Benjamin is a proactive engineer with good communication skills and an awareness of the importance of cost effective designs to achieve the required fire and life safety outcomes across a range of engineering projects.

Benjamin has experience in communicating fire engineering issues to authorities, fire engineers, principle certifying authorities and design teams.

John Henry, Technical Director - Fire, Trafalgar Group

John spearheads the technical team and has been instrumental in facilitating Trafalgar’s Fyre Training sessions across Australia and New Zealand.

After spending over 8 years at Trafalgar, John has emerged as a prominent expert in the passive fire industry, helping to develop and introduce numerous innovative passive fire solutions in Australia. His extensive experience and technical proficiency have enabled him to author whitepapers, articles, and technical manuals.
