Strong Action on Fire Safety - NSW Building Reforms

FPA Australia commends the NSW Government, led by the Hon Victor Dominello MP, Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation, on its response to the Independent Review of the Building Professionals Act 2005 (the Lambert report).

The Response tabled in Parliament in September outlines the Government's full or partial support for 72 of the recommendations (of the 150 set down in the Independent review), including several that have been long championed by FPA Australia.

The majority of fire safety reforms recommended in the Lambert report have been supported as part of the Government's Response, and a further 70 recommendations will now be reviewed in consultation with industry.

Major Association Expansion & Sydney Training Centre Announced

Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) is excited to announce the launch of a new training centre and the creation of several new positions as part of a major organisational expansion.

Based conveniently at Mascot in Sydney, the new FPA Australia training centre will provide capacity for the Association to deliver its range of fire protection industry training options face-to-face in dedicated assessment environments.

The new facility will be one of only a few training centres in Australia that are focussed on wet systems (including sprinklers, hydrants and pumps) as well as detection & alarm systems, special hazard systems and passive fire protection.

In addition we have also created six new positions within the areas of Engagement & Events, Education & Bushfire Services, Member & Industry Services and Technical Services. These appointments will greatly enhance our ability to deliver for our members, industry stakeholders and the community.

FPA Australia Secures ODS & SGG Tender

Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) is pleased to announce it has been successful in the tender process to continue to facilitate services for the Fire Protection Industry (ODS & SGG) Board (the Board) for the next two years through a service agreement with the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Energy.

FPA Australia CEO Scott Williams said the Association was looking forward to continuing its successful partnership with the Department while actively promoting industry good practice.

Corporate Members! Provider of Choice Update Deadline October 31

Important changes to our "Provider of Choice" trading activities will be coming into effect in November, meaning all Corporate members have until October 31 to update your details and ensure your listing remains on the Association's website.

The FPA Australia website is visited by more than 10,000 individuals per month, with the majority of these searching for fire protection products and services on the "Providers of Choice" page, so it is critical your company does not disappear from the results.

A Warning About Businesses Posing as Council

FPA Australia is again warning building owners, occupiers and managers about unethical fire protection providers posing as representatives of local council relating to fire.

There have been ongoing reports of such activity particularly in NSW and Victoria, with one known company portraying itself as part of "The Council" relating to fire and using this false appearance of authority to opportunistically profiteer.

AS 1851-2012 Amendment 1 Seminar Dates Announced

We are pleased to announce a new national seminar series to update the industry on the changes introduced to AS 1851-2012 Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems & Equipment as a result of the publication of amendment 1.

To support this amendment FPA Australia is developing a Good Practice Guide providing discussion regarding the definition of baseline data required by Amendment 1, how to go about obtaining baseline data and identification of tasks in each of the tables in the Standard that require baseline data to be completed.

This event will focus on the changes in Amendment 1 and also include a copy of the new Good Practice Guide and provide an update on the legislative requirements in your jurisdiction.

Western Australian BCAC Appointment

FPA Australia has recently been appointed to the Western Australian Building Commission Advisory Committee (BCAC). The Committee is an advisory forum that comprises occupational and technical groups directly regulated by the Building Commission, plus industry stakeholder groups that have a key and direct role in the regulated building process.

FPA Australia is the first organisation to be added to the BCAC by the Building Commissioner since it was established following the introduction of the Western Australian Building Act 2011.  This appointment recognises the importance of fire safety and the emerging profile of FPA Australia nationally with other key regulators, and locally in Western Australia recently via involvement in bushfire regulatory reforms.

An Interview With Alex Webb - CSIRO

FPA TV caught up with Alex Webb from CSIRO at the Fire Australia + HazMat Conference & Tradeshow in May. In this short interview Alex discusses current issues around external walls and cladding fires as well as CSIRO's role in the building and construction sector.

We're regularly updating our FPA TV Youtube Channel with more interviews and informative videos so check it out.

Have Your Say On The AS 2419.1 Draft Revisions

Over the last couple of years, FPA Australia has been involved in the revision of a number of key Australian Standards for fire protection at the relevant Standards Australia committees.

One of these standards has now been released with the intent that public comment will be resolved and the standards published in time for this to be adopted in BCA 2019. This timeline is critical as the BCA revision cycle is now 3 yearly meaning if the deadline for adoption in BCA 2019 is missed then the next edition when these standards could be adopted is BCA 2022.

You can now provide your public comment directly to Standards Australia or through FPA Australia to be included with our consolidated submission.
