A Christmas Message from our CEO Scott Williams

It seems hard to believe that once again the Christmas / New Year break is upon us after what has been a hugely busy and successful year for the Association and I hope for our members and the fire protection industry.

Our success this year has been led by the continued growth of our Fire Protection Accreditation Scheme (FPAS), the launch of our Workplace Relations Department and the continued national adoption of the new standard for fire protection inspection and testing: AS 1851-2012.

FPAS continues to grow strongly with hundreds of technicians now accredited in the Inspect & Test class and the launch of the Fire Systems Design and Fire Systems Certify accreditation classes, which will be open for applications early in the new year.

As an Association we have strongly advocated for the adoption and use of AS 1851-2012 in all states and territories. As a result, Victoria is now the only remaining jurisdiction where using AS 1851-2012 is not yet possible and this is expected to be addressed with the sun-setting of the Victorian Building Act, which will end in 2016. The work on this important standard has been complemented by the success of our AS 1851-2012 logbooks, which have been meticulously researched and represent industry best practice.

Important too has been the outstanding continued growth in respect and trust of our Association's brand. Thanks to dedicated work by both our staff and volunteer representatives, the FPA Australia brand has developed respect and momentum in every sector of the industry. We are now having input at the highest levels of policy making at state, territory and national level and the Association is proud of our level of influence in fire related policy outcomes.

The 2015 Fire Australia Conference & Exhibition on the Gold Coast is shaping up to be one of the most successful conferences yet. Product compliance will be a significant focus for the Association in the new year and it is fitting that the conference theme is focussed on this important issue. The Association will be making some significant announcements about our plans in this regard at the conference and I look forward to seeing many of you there in March.

In 2015 we will maintain our strong support of our members and the industry and continue to work towards our vision of helping to minimise the impact of fire on life, property and the environment, for a safer community.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, all of the staff at the National Office, our valued volunteers and the members I would like to wish you a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. I look forward to working with you again in 2015.

Merry Christmas.

Scott Williams
CEO - FPA Australia

AS 2118.1 - Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems - Public Comment Forum

A fully updated and revised version of AS 2118.1 - Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems – General Systems is due to be released for public comment in early February 2015.

FPA Australia will be hosting a seminar series on the draft standard shortly after its release.

Representatives of FPA Australia’s Technical Advisory Committee TAC/4/8/9 (Fire Sprinkler & Hydrants Systems, Tanks and Fixed Fire Pumps) have been assisting Standards Australia committee FP 004 with the revision of the standard.

The planned forums are aimed at informing and coordinating broad industry feedback to the Public Comment Draft of AS 2118.1 developed by Standards Australia that affects a large proportion of the fire protection industry. The forum will provide an opportunity for those in the industry, and related fields, to review the scope and details of the proposed changes and provide feedback for further consideration by FP 004 prior to its completion and release.

FPA Australia will provide a broad overview of the proposed changes and the anticipated effects and benefits to clients, the industry and the environment. The Association will also outline how comments provided to FPA Australia will be consolidated into an industry submission to Standards Australia in relation to the Public Comment Draft.

Details of the seminar will be released in early 2015 so keep an eye out for dates and locations.
Victorian Membership Group Golf Day a Great Success

The Victorian Membership Group's Annual Golf Day was held on Friday 7 November 2014 at the Rossdale Golf Club on the Mornington Peninsula.

Nine teams started the day's golf in bright sunny conditions. With light winds providing some relief from the sun and heat. After the game all the players were joined by an additional ten lunch guests who enjoyed a casual luncheon of generous proportions and the awarding of Golf and door prizes.

Victorian Membership Group Chairman, Rod Buncle, welcomed all guests and competitors and made special thanks to all of the kind key sponsors: Brooks, Globe Fire Sprinklers Australia, Flamestop, Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers together with Ampac and FM Global who helped make it an enjoyable social experience for our Members and their guests. Mr Buncle also thanked Dennis O'Brien, Norm Winn and the staff at National Office for assisting in the organisation of the day.

It was a great day on many fronts: the weather, the venue, meals and in particular all the FPA Australia members and sponsors who contributed to the day in what is currently a challenging business environment. Thank you for all attending and supporting the Association and we look forward to an even bigger golf day in 2015.
